MEET
DR MAGAN
Having grown up in Everest Heights in a small family, Dr Avesh Magan was drawn to medicine due to his intense interest in biology at the school level. After completing his medical degree at the University of Transkei in 2002, Dr Avesh Magan went on to complete his internship at King Edward Hospital in Durban, and his community service at the Church of Scotland Hospital the following year.
Having the consummate gratification of saving human limb and life purposely lead him to pursue a specialisation in orthopaedics. In 2005 he completed his diploma in psychiatry and mental health at the University of Stellenbosch before becoming a Medical Officer in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Natal. Dr Magan then worked as a Registrar in Orthopaedic Surgery in 2007.
Dr Magan completed his fellowship in Orthopaedic Surgery through the College of Medicine of South Africa in 2012. In 2013, he was also the senior lecturer at Walter Sisulu University and worked as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Life St Mary's Private Hospital in Mthatha. Dr Magan also worked as a consultant in sports medicine for SA biomedical and was the head of Sports Medicine at Bedford Hospital during this time.
In 2014, Dr Magan gained invaluable training in Germany on European standards of arthroscopic knee and shoulder surgery. In the very same year, he was made a consultant for the most advanced orthobiologic and surgical product solutions, Arthrex. Dr Magan opened his private practice at Life St Mary’s in Mthatha. He also opened his very own chronic back pain clinic in Mthatha, after becoming certified to perform rhizotomies.
Dr Magan has always been eager to enhance his arthroscopic surgery skills and has completed numerous training workshops and courses in SA, the USA, France and Spain, still continuing to do so each year. He is a member of both the Shoulder and Elbow Society of South Africa (SASES) as well as the Knee Society of South Africa (SAKS).
Dr Magan’s private practices are now based at Scottburgh and in Port Shepstone, and while he is well-versed in treatment and management of a range of orthopaedic conditions, he has a special interest in arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery, pain management for back pain and minimally invasive spinal surgery. As an Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr Magan is passionate about his field and finds it a privilege to have the opportunity to alleviate suffering in the form of pain, deformity and disability, and directly impact of the lives of each of his patients.
Dr Magan aims to maintain that delicate equilibrium between work and home, so when he isn’t in theatre, he enjoys spending time with his family and his son, taking every opportunity to enjoy nature within the KZN South Coast.
